English translation

It is narrated from Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the delegation of Banu Abdul Qais came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him), they said, "We belong to the tribe of Rabi’ah. Between us and you is the tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar, and we can only come to you during the sacred months. So tell us something by acting upon which we may enter Paradise and also inform those who are behind us." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "I command you to do four things and forbid you from four things: Worship Allah, do not associate anything with Him, establish prayer, give zakat, fast in Ramadan, and send one-fifth of the spoils of war to the treasury. And I forbid you from (using) vessels called Duba’, Hantam, Naqir, and Muzaffat." The people asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the meaning of "Naqir." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "It is the hollowed-out stump of a date-palm, into which pieces, dates, or water are put, and when it ferments, it is drunk. Then one of you may strike his cousin with a sword." Coincidentally, there was a man among the people at that time who had been wounded for this very reason, and I began to hide him out of shame. Then those people asked, "What do you command us regarding drinks?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Drink from those water skins whose mouths are tied." They said, "There are many rats in our area, and leather water skins do not last." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said two or three times, "Even if the rats gnaw at them." And he said to the leader of the delegation, "There are two qualities in you that Allah loves very much: forbearance and dignity."
