Hadith of Suwayd ibn Ghaflah from Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them)

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: "هَكَذَا حَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، وَقَالَ فِيهِ: عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ، وَخَالَفَ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ رِوَايَةَ مَنْ رَوَاهُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، لِأَنَّهُ رَوَاهُ عَدَدٌ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، وَقَالُوا فِيهِ: عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ " (١)، حَدِيثُ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، ٢١١٦٦ - حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، وَحَدَّثَنَا، عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، حَدَّثَنِي سُوَيْدُ بْنُ غَفَلَةَ، قَالَ: خَرَجْتُ مَعَ زَيْدِ بْنِ صُوحَانَ وَسَلْمَانَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِالْعُذَيْبِ، الْتَقَطْتُ سَوْطًا، فَقَالَا لِي: أَلْقِهِ، فَأَبَيْتُ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ لَقِيتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: الْتَقَطْتُ مِائَةَ دِينَارٍ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا سَنَةً، فَلَمْ أَجِدْ أَحَدًا يَعْرِفُهَا. قَالَ: فَقَالَ: "اعْرِفْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا، ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً، فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا، وَإِلَّا فَهِيَ، ، كَسَبِيلِ مَالِكَ " وَهَذَا لَفْظُ وَكِيعٍ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، فِي حَدِيثِهِ: فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: "اعْلَمْ عِدَّتَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا، فَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ يُخْبِرُكَ بِعِدَّتِهَا وَوِعَائِهَا وَوِكَائِهَا، فَأَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ، وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا " (١)، ،

It is narrated from Suwaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I went out with Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabee’ah. When we reached the place of ‘Adheeb, I found a whip lying on the way. Both of them said to me, “Throw it away,” but I refused. Upon reaching Madinah Munawwarah, I met Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned this incident to him. He said that during the blessed era of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ), I once found one hundred dinars lying on the way. I asked the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) about it, and he said, “Announce it for one year.” I kept announcing for one year, but I did not find anyone who could identify it. (I then presented myself again, and) the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) again ordered me to announce it for another year. (Finally,) he said, “Keep in mind its amount, its wrapper, and its binding well, and announce it for another year. If its owner comes, very good; otherwise, you may benefit from it.”

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سُوَيْدَ بْنَ غَفَلَةَ، وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، (١) حَدَّثَنِي سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سُوَيْدَ بْنَ غَفَلَةَ، قَالَ: غَزَوْتُ مَعَ زَيْدِ بْنِ صُوحَانَ وَسَلْمَانَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، فَوَجَدْتُ سَوْطًا،، ، فَأَخَذْتُهُ، فَقَالَا لِي: اطْرَحْهُ، فَقُلْتُ: لَا، وَلَكِنْ أُعَرِّفُهُ، فَإِنْ وَجَدْتُ مَنْ يَعْرِفُهُ، وَإِلَّا اسْتَمْتَعْتُ بِهِ، فَأَبَيَا عَلَيَّ، وَأَبَيْتُ عَلَيْهِمَا، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا مِنْ غَزَاتِنَا، حَجَجْتُ، فَأَتَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ، فَلَقِيتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ، فَذَكَرْتُ لَهُ قَوْلَهُمَا وَقَوْلِي لَهُمَا، فَقَالَ: وَجَدْتُ صُرَّةً فِيهَا مِائَةُ دِينَارٍ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَذَكَرْتُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا حَوْلًا " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا، فَلَمْ أَجِدْ مَنْ يَعْرِفُهَا، فَأَتَيْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: لَمْ أَجِدْ مَنْ يَعْرِفُهَا. فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا حَوْلًا " ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، وَلَا أَدْرِي قَالَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ فِي سَنَةٍ، أَوْ فِي ثَلَاثِ سِنِينَ، فَقَالَ لِي فِي الرَّابِعَةِ: "اعْرِفْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا، فَإِنْ وَجَدْتَ مَنْ يَعْرِفُهَا، وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا " وَهَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ وَزَادَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، فِي حَدِيثِهِ: قَالَ: "فَلَقِيتُهُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ بِمَكَّةَ، فَقَالَ: لَا أَدْرِي ثَلَاثَةَ أَحْوَالٍ، أَوْ حَوْلًا وَاحِدًا " (١)، ، •

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، (١) حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، قَالَ: كُنَّا حُجَّاجًا، فَوَجَدْتُ سَوْطًا، فَأَخَذْتُهُ، فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ: تَأْخُذُهُ؟ فَلَعَلَّهُ لِرَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: أَوَلَيْسَ لِي أَخْذُهُ، فَأَنْتَفِعَ بِهِ،، ، خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَأْكُلَهُ الذِّئْبُ؟ فَلَقِيتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: أَحْسَنْتَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: الْتَقَطْتُ صُرَّةً فِيهَا مِائَةُ دِينَارٍ، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا حَوْلًا " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: قَدْ عَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا. فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً أُخْرَى " ثُمَّ قَالَ: "انْتَفِعْ بِهَا، وَاحْفَظْ وِكَاءَهَا وَخِرْقَتَهَا، وَأَحْصِ عَدَدَهَا، فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا " قَالَ جَرِيرٌ: "فَلَمْ أَحْفَظْ مَا بَعْدَ هَذَا. يَعْنِي: تَمَامَ الْحَدِيثِ " (١)، •

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جُحَادَةَ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ: الْتَقَطْتُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِائَةَ دِينَارٍ، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا سَنَةً، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: قَدْ عَرَّفْتُهَا سَنَةً. قَالَ: "عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً أُخْرَى " فَعَرَّفْتُهَا سَنَةً أُخْرَى، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ، فَقَالَ: "أَحْصِ عَدَدَهَا، ، ووِكَاءَهَا، وَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا " (١)،

It is narrated from Suwaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said that during the blessed era of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ), I found one hundred dinars lying on the road. I asked the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) about it, so the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said: Announce it for one year. I kept announcing it for one year, but I did not find anyone who could identify it. I then presented myself again, and the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) again ordered me to announce it for another year. It is narrated from Suwaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I set out for Hajj with Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabee'ah... Then the narrator mentioned the entire hadith and at the end said: He said, keep in mind its quantity, its wrapper, and its binding well, and announce it for another year. If its owner comes, very good; otherwise, you may benefit from it.

حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، (ح) وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ النَّاجِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، قَالَ: حَجَجْتُ أَنَا وَزَيْدُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ وَسَلْمَانُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ. قَالَ: فَعَرَّفْتُهَا عَامَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً، قَالَ: "اعْرِفْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا، وَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا، فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا، فَعَرَفَ عِدَّتَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا، فَأَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ " (٢)، ،

Bahz narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us. And Abdullah narrated to us, he said: Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Naji narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Suwayd ibn Ghafalah, he said: I performed Hajj along with Zayd ibn Suhan and Salman ibn Rabi'ah, and he mentioned the hadith, he said: So I recognized it for two or three years, he said: "Recognize its number, its container, and its tie, and benefit from it, but if its owner comes and recognizes its number and its tie, then give it to him."
