Hadith of Muhammad ibn Maslamah Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، ١٧٩٧٦ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ غُنْدَرٌ، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ، - قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ: سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ - قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ يُطَارِدُ امْرَأَةً مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا، - قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ: ُثبَيتَة (١) ابْنَةَ الضَّحَّاكِ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا -، فَقُلْتُ: أَنْتَ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتَفْعَلُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " إِذَا أَلْقَى اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ امْرِئٍ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ، فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا " (٢)،

Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I saw Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) looking at a woman. I said to him, "You are a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), yet you are looking at a non-mahram woman?" He replied, "I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that if Allah puts the thought of sending a marriage proposal to a woman in a person's heart, then there is no harm in looking at her." The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ الْعَوَّامِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ، يُطَارِدُ ثُبَيْتَةُ ابْنَةَ الضَّحَّاكِ أُخْتَ أَبِي، ، جَبِيرَةَ بْنِ الضَّحَّاكِ وَهِيَ عَلَى إِجَّارٍ لَهُمْ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ (١)،

Suraij ibn al-Nu'man narrated to us, he said: 'Abbad ibn al-'Awwam narrated to us, he said: Hajjaj ibn Arta'ah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathmah, from his uncle Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah, he said: I saw Muhammad ibn Maslamah chasing Buthaynah bint al-Dahhak, the sister of Abu Jabirah ibn al-Dahhak, while she was on a roof of theirs, and he mentioned the hadith.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ قَبِيصَةَ بْنِ ذُؤَيْبٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: هَلْ سَمِعَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهَا (٢) شَيْئًا؟ فَقَامَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ فَقَالَ: " شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْضِي لَهَا بِالسُّدُسِ "، فَقَالَ: هَلْ سَمِعَ ذَلِكَ مَعَكَ أَحَدٌ؟ فَقَامَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، فَقَالَ: " شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْضِي لَهَا بِالسُّدُسِ " " فَأَعْطَاهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ السُّدُسَ " (٣)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

It is narrated from Qabeesah bin Dhu’ayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them): Has any of you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say anything regarding the inheritance of the grandmother? Then Mugheerah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: I was present at that decision when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) decreed one-sixth for her. Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Did anyone else hear this decision with you? Upon this, Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and confirmed and attested to Mugheerah bin Shu’bah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) statement. Thus, Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the grandmother be given one-sixth of the inheritance.

حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ، يَقُولُ: إِنَّ عَلِيًّا بَعَثَ إِلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ، فَجِيءَ بِهِ فَقَالَ: مَا خَلَّفَكَ عَنْ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ؟ قَالَ: دَفَعَ إِلَيَّ ابْنُ عَمِّكَ - يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - سَيْفًا، فَقَالَ: " قَاتِلْ بِهِ مَا قُوتِلَ الْعَدُوُّ،، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَقْتُلُ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا، فَاعْمَدْ بِهِ إِلَى صَخْرَةٍ، فَاضْرِبْهُ بِهَا، ثُمَّ الْزَمْ بَيْتَكَ حَتَّى تَأْتِيَكَ مَنِيَّةٌ قَاضِيَةٌ، أَوْ يَدٌ خَاطِئَةٌ "، قَالَ: خَلُّوا عَنْهُ (١)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he came, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Why have you withdrawn from the affairs of the state?" He replied, "Your cousin, that is, the Prophet (ﷺ), gave me a sword and said, 'Fight the enemy with this sword. When you see that people have started killing each other among themselves, then take this sword and strike it on a rock, and sit in your house until death comes to you and decides your matter, or a sinful hand reaches you.'" Upon hearing this, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Leave him alone."

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ يَعْنِي الرَّازِيَّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مَالِكَ بْنَ أَنَسٍ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خَرَشَةَ، وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خَرَشَةَ (١) ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: وحَدَّثَنَا مُصْعَبٌ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، مِثْلَهُ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خَرَشَةَ، مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَيٍّ وَلَمْ يُسْنِدْهُ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَحَدٌ إِلَّا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ قَبِيصَةَ بْنِ ذُؤَيْبٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَتِ الْجَدَّةُ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ تَسْأَلُهُ مِيرَاثَهَا، فَقَالَ: مَا أَعْلَمُ لَكِ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ شَيْئًا، وَلَا أَعْلَمُ لَكِ، ، فِي سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ، حَتَّى أَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ، فَسَأَلَ فَقَالَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ: " سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَعَلَ لَهَا السُّدُسَ "، فَقَالَ: مَنْ يَشْهَدُ مَعَكَ؟ أَوْ مَنْ يَعْلَمُ مَعَكَ؟ فَقَامَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ فَقَالَ: مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، فَأَنْفَذَهُ لَهَا وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى: هَلْ مَعَكَ غَيْرُكَ؟ (١)، ،

It is narrated from Qabeesah bin Dhu’ayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a grandmother came to Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked about her share in inheritance. Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), “Has any of you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say anything regarding the inheritance of a grandmother?” Then Mugheerah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said, “I was present at that decision when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) decided for her a sixth share.” Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “Did anyone else hear this decision with you?” Upon this, Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and confirmed and attested to Mugheerah bin Shu’bah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) statement. Thus, Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the grandmother be given a sixth share in inheritance.

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ ثَوْرٍ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ، مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " إِذَا قَذَفَ اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ امْرِئٍ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ، فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا " (١)،

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: If Allah creates in a person's heart the thought of sending a marriage proposal to a woman, then there is no harm in looking at her.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ أَبُو عُمَرَ،، ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَشْعَثِ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، قَالَ: بَعَثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ إِلَى ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ، دَخَلْتُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ - نَسِيَ زِيَادٌ اسْمَهُ (١) - فَقَالَ: إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ صَنَعُوا مَا صَنَعُوا، فَمَا تَرَى؟ فَقَالَ: " أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنْ أَدْرَكْتَ شَيْئًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْفِتَنِ، فَاعْمَدْ إِلَى أُحُدٍ، فَاكْسِرْ بِهِ حَدَّ سَيْفِكَ، ثُمَّ اقْعُدْ فِي بَيْتِكَ "، قَالَ: " فَإِنْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْكَ أَحَدٌ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ، فَقُمْ إِلَى الْمَخْدَعِ، فَإِنْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْكَ الْمَخْدَعَ فَاجْثُ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْكَ، وَقُلْ بُؤْ بِإِثْمِي وَإِثْمِكَ، فَتَكُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ، وَذَلِكَ جَزَاءُ الظَّالِمِينَ " فَقَدْ كَسَرْتُ حَدَّ سَيْفِي، وَقَعَدْتُ فِي بَيْتِي (٢)، ،

Abu Al-Ash'ath San'ani says that once Yazid sent us to Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him). When I reached Madinah Munawwarah, I also visited a certain person whose name the narrator forgot, and said, "You can see what people are doing. What is your opinion regarding this matter?" He replied, "My close friend Abu Al-Qasim (ﷺ) advised me that if you encounter a time of tribulation, go to Mount Uhud and strike the edge of your sword on it, then sit in your house. If someone enters your house, go into your room. If he comes there as well, then bend down on your knees and say, 'Take both my and your sins and go back, so that you become among the people of Hellfire, and that is the recompense for the wrongdoers.' Therefore, I have broken the edge of my sword and am sitting in my house."
