It is narrated from Nafi’ that once I went out with the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) entered a garden and said to me, “Stay at the door and do not let anyone enter without permission.” Then he sat on the edge of a well and let his feet hang into the well. Meanwhile, there was a knock at the door. I asked, “Who is it?” The reply came, “Abu Bakr.” I submitted to the Prophet (ﷺ), “O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr has come.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Allow him to enter and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.” So I allowed him to enter and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. He entered and sat on the edge of the well with the Prophet (ﷺ), letting his feet hang into the well. A little while later, there was another knock at the door. I asked, “Who is it?” The reply came, “Umar.” I submitted to the Prophet (ﷺ), “O Messenger of Allah! It is Umar.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Let him enter and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.” So I allowed him to enter and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. He entered and sat on the edge of the well with the Prophet (ﷺ), letting his feet hang into the well. A little while later, there was another knock at the door. I asked, “Who is it?” The reply came, “Uthman.” I submitted to the Prophet (ﷺ), “O Messenger of Allah! Uthman has come.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Allow him to enter and give him the glad tidings of Paradise along with a calamity.” So I allowed him to enter and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. He also entered and sat on the edge of the well with the Prophet (ﷺ), letting his feet hang into the well.
