Hadith of Abu Hashim ibn 'Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ (١)، ١٥٦٦٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ،، ، قَالَ: دَخَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى خَالِهِ أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ يَعُودُهُ، قَالَ: فَبَكَى، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ: مَا يُبْكِيكَ يَا خَالُ؟ أَوَجَعًا يُشْئِزُكَ أَمْ حِرْصًا عَلَى الدُّنْيَا؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ: فَكُلًّا لَا، وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَهِدَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: " يَا أَبَا هَاشِمٍ لَعَلَّكَ أَنْ (١) تُدْرِكَ أَمْوَالًا يُؤْتَاهَا أَقْوَامٌ، وَإِنَّمَا يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ جَمْعِ الْمَالِ خَادِمٌ، وَمَرْكَبٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى "، وَإِنِّي أُرَانِي قَدْ جَمَعْتُ (٢)، ،

Shaqiq narrates that once Muawiyah went to visit his maternal uncle Abu Hashim bin Utbah who was ill. Abu Hashim began to weep. Muawiyah asked, "Dear uncle, why are you weeping? Is there pain somewhere or do you desire more of worldly life?" He replied, "It is neither of these. Rather, the Prophet (peace be upon him) took a promise from us and said: 'O Abu Hashim, it may be that you are given so much wealth as is not given to many nations, but for you, in accumulating wealth, a servant and a mount for striving in the path of Allah should suffice.' But now I see that I have accumulated a great deal of wealth."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، وَمَنْصُورٍ، (١) عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ: دَخَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ وَهُوَ مَرِيضٌ يَبْكِي، فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ (٢)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،
