Chapter 1

Abdullah Yashkari says that when the grand mosque of Kufa was built for the first time, I went there. At that time, there were also date palm trees there and its walls were made of sandy soil. There was a man named Ibn Muntafiq, who began to narrate this hadith: I received news of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Farewell Pilgrimage, so I selected a ride-worthy camel from among my camels and set out. When I reached a place on the way to Arafah, I sat down. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) mounted his ride, I recognized him by his appearance. Meanwhile, a man who was ahead of him said, “Move out of the way of the riders!” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Perhaps he has some need.” So I came so close to the Prophet (peace be upon him) that the heads of our two mounts were near each other. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Tell me of an action that will admit me to Paradise and save me from Hell.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Wonderful, wonderful! Although you have asked a very concise question, it is a very excellent one. If you are capable, then worship only Allah, do not associate anything with Him, establish prayer, pay zakat, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, and fast in the month of Ramadan. Now, make way for the riders.”
