Hadith of Ubaydullah ibn 'Adi al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him)

حَدِيثُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ (١) بْنِ عَدِيٍّ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، ٢٣٦٧٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ الْخِيَارِ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا، مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ حَدَّثَهُ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ فِي مَجْلِسٍ فَسَارَّهُ يَسْتَأْذِنُهُ فِي قَتْلِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ، فَجَهَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: " أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ " قَالَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ؟ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَلَا شَهَادَةَ لَهُ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ " قَالَ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَلَا شَهَادَةَ لَهُ (٢) ، قَالَ: " أَلَيْسَ يُصَلِّي؟ " قَالَ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَلَا صَلَاةَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ نَهَانِي اللهُ عَنْهُمْ " (٣)، ، . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .، ،

Ubaidullah bin Adi narrates from an Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that he presented himself before the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) and, in a whisper, sought permission from the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) to kill a hypocrite man. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) asked in a loud voice, "Does he not testify that there is no god but Allah?" He replied, "Why not, O Messenger of Allah! But he does not testify with his heart." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) asked, "Does he not testify that Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Why not, O Messenger of Allah! But he does not testify with his heart." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) asked, "Does he not perform prayer?" He replied, "Why not, O Messenger of Allah! But he does not perform prayer with his heart." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah has forbidden me from killing such people."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ الْخِيَارِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ يَعْنِي يَسْتَأْذِنُهُ أَنْ يُسَارَّهُ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ (١)، ،

Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us from al-Zuhri from Ata ibn Yazid al-Laythi from Ubayd Allah ibn Adi ibn al-Khiyar from Abdullah ibn Adi al-Ansari, who narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was sitting, a man came to him—meaning, seeking permission to speak to him privately—so he mentioned its meaning.
