Hadith of a shaykh from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

حَدِيثُ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ٢٣٤٨٨ - حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ قَالَ: جَلَسْتُ إِلَى شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَسْجِدِ الْكُوفَةِ فَحَدَّثَنِي، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ـ أَوْ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ـ: " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، تُوبُوا إِلَى اللهِ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ، فَإِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَى اللهِ وَأَسْتَغْفِرُهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ "، فَقُلْتُ: اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ، [اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ] ثْنَتَانِ قَالَ: هُوَ مَا أَقُولُ لَكَ (١)، ،

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: O people, keep repenting to your Lord, and I myself repent to Him a hundred times in a day. I asked him, "Are 'Allahumma inni astaghfiruka' and 'Allahumma inni atubu ilayk' two separate things or the same?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: They are the same.
