Chapter 1

Abu Jubairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his uncles that when the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, there was no one among us who did not have one or two nicknames. When the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) would call someone by his nickname, we would say, "O Messenger of Allah! He dislikes this name." Upon this, the following verse was revealed: "Do not insult one another by using different nicknames."

Abdullah bin Khubaib narrates from his uncle that we were sitting in a gathering when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came, and there were signs of water on his blessed head. We said, "O Messenger of Allah! We see you very happy." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Yes!" Then people started talking about wealth, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "There is no harm in wealth for the one who fears Allah, but for the one who fears Allah, health is better than wealth, and the happiness of the heart is also a blessing."

It is narrated from a Sheikh of Banu Sulait that once I came to the service of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) to discuss those of my captives who had been captured during the time of ignorance. At that time, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) was seated and people had formed a circle around him. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) had tied a thick waistcloth and was gesturing with his fingers. I heard the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) saying: A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he does not oppress him nor does he leave him helpless. Taqwa is here, taqwa is here, that is, in the heart.

It is narrated from an Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: Horses are of three kinds: (1) Those horses which a person prepares for jihad in the way of Allah—their price is a source of reward, riding them is a source of reward, lending them is a source of reward, and feeding them is a source of reward; (2) Those horses which entrap a person in the shell of arrogance and he enters them in races for betting—their price is a cause of burden and feeding them is a cause of burden; (3) Those horses which serve a person’s livelihood—soon these horses will become a means of removing his poverty and hunger, insha’Allah.
