حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنَ زِيَادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَارَةُ بْنُ الْقَعْقَاعِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي مَا قَعَدْتُ خِلَافَ سَرِيَّةٍ تَغْزُو (١) فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، وَلَكِنْ لَا أَجِدُ مَا أَحْمِلُهُمْ، وَلَا يَجِدُونَ سَعَةً فَيَتْبَعُونِي، وَلَا تَطِيبُ أَنْفُسُهُمْ أَنْ يَتَخَلَّفُوا بَعْدِي " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from the same chain of transmission that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul, if I did not think that the Muslims would fall into hardship, I would never stay behind from any expedition sent out in the way of Allah. But I do not find enough mounts on which I could make them ride, and they do not have enough means to follow me, and their hearts would not be content, and after me, they would begin to stay behind from participating in jihad.
