Once Marwan bin Hakam asked Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did you perform the prayer of fear (Salat al-Khawf) with the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)?" He replied, "Yes!" Marwan asked, "When?" He replied, "In the year of the Battle of Najd, and it was like this: the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) stood for the Asr prayer, one group stood behind him and the other faced the enemy with their backs towards the Qiblah. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said the Takbir, and all those who were participating in the prayer with the Prophet (ﷺ) or fighting the enemy also said the Takbir. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) performed one bowing (ruku‘), and the group behind him also performed ruku‘. Then he performed prostration (sajdah), and the group behind him also performed sajdah, while the other group remained standing in front of the enemy. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) stood up, and the group with him also stood up. These people went to fight the enemy, and the group that was fighting the enemy came here. They first performed ruku‘ and sajdah, and the Prophet (ﷺ) remained standing. When they stood up, the Prophet (ﷺ) led them in the second rak‘ah, and they performed ruku‘ and sajdah with the Prophet (ﷺ). Then the group facing the enemy also came and performed ruku‘ and sajdah first. The Prophet (ﷺ) and the other followers remained seated, then the salam was said. When the Prophet (ﷺ) said the salam, everyone said the salam together. In this way, the Prophet (ﷺ) also performed two rak‘ahs, and each group also performed two rak‘ahs."
