Translation

English translation

Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he married a woman from the Quraysh, but due to his strength and enthusiasm for prayer and fasting, he did not pay any attention to her. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to know of this, he said: "Fast three days every month." I said, "I feel I have the strength for more than that." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept giving me concessions until finally he said: "Then fast one day and leave one day." And he said: "Recite the Qur'an once a month." I said, "I have the strength for more than that." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then said fifteen days, then at my request, seven, until finally three days. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Every deed has a period of enthusiasm, and every enthusiasm has an end—either towards the Sunnah or towards innovation. Whoever's end is towards the Sunnah, he is guided, and whoever's end is towards something else, he is destroyed."
