حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: لَمَّا مَاتَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ، جَاءَ ابْنُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَعْطِنِي قَمِيصَكَ حَتَّى أُكَفِّنَهُ فِيهِ وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ، وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُ فَأَعْطَاهُ قَمِيصَهُ، وَقَالَ: " آذِنِّي بِهِ "، فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: - يَعْنِي عُمَرَ - قَدْ نَهَاكَ اللهُ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ، فَقَالَ: " أَنَا بَيْنَ خِيرَتَيْنِ ": {اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ} [التوبة: ٨٠] فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: {وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا} [التوبة: ٨٤] ، قَالَ: فَتُرِكَتِ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْهِمْ (١)، ،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the chief of the hypocrites, Abdullah bin Ubayy, died, his son—who was a sincere Muslim—came to the service of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Please give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it, and lead his funeral prayer, and also seek forgiveness from Allah for him." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) gave him his shirt and said, "Inform me at the time of the funeral." When the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) stepped forward to lead the prayer, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted, "Allah has forbidden you from leading the funeral prayer of the hypocrites." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I have been given a choice regarding two matters: to seek forgiveness or not to seek forgiveness." Thus, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) led his funeral prayer. Later, Allah the Exalted revealed the command that for any of them who dies, never perform their funeral prayer. Thus, after that, their funeral prayer was abandoned.
