Abu Salamah says that once there was a difference of opinion between Abu Hurairah and Ibn Abbas regarding a woman whose husband passes away and she gives birth to a child. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that after giving birth she can marry, while Ibn Abbas said that she will complete the longer of the two waiting periods. Then they sent a messenger to Umm Salamah, and she said that Sabi’ah bint Harith’s husband had passed away, and only fifteen days, that is, half a month after his death, she gave birth to a child. Then two men sent proposals of marriage to Sabi’ah, and she inclined towards one of them. When people realized that she might choose one of them, they said, “You are not yet lawful (for marriage).” She went to the Prophet (ﷺ), and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “You have become lawful, so you may marry whomever you wish.”
