English translation

It is narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a companion of the Prophet (ﷺ) came to the presence of the Prophet, sat in front of him and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have some slaves; they lie to me, commit dishonesty, and do not obey me. Then I beat them and speak harshly to them. What will be my situation with regard to them?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Their dishonesty, lying, and disobedience and your punishment will all be accounted for. If your punishment is less than their crimes, it will be better for you. If your punishment is equal to their sins, then the matter will be settled equally—neither for you nor against you. And if your punishment exceeds their sins, then the excess will be taken from you." Upon this, the man began to weep and cry out in front of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What has happened to him? Does he not read this verse in the Noble Qur'an: 'And We shall set up the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be dealt with unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.'" The man said, "O Messenger of Allah! I do not find any better solution than to separate all these slaves from myself. Therefore, I make you a witness that they are all free."
