حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: رَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ حِينَ دَخَلَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ، فَاضْطَجَعَ فِي حِجْرِي، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْ، ، آلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، وَفِي يَدِهِ سِوَاكٌ أَخْضَرُ، قَالَتْ: فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَدِهِ نَظَرًا عَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُهُ، قَالَتْ: فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، تُحِبُّ أَنْ أُعْطِيَكَ هَذَا السِّوَاكَ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ ". قَالَتْ: فَأَخَذْتُهُ فَمَضَغْتُهُ لَهُ حَتَّى أَلَنْتُهُ وَأَعْطَيْتُهُ إِيَّاهُ. قَالَتْ: فَاسْتَنَّ بِهِ كَأَشَدِّ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ يَسْتَنُّ بِسِوَاكٍ فَبَلَّهُ، ثُمَّ وَضَعَهُ، وَوَجَدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَثْقُلُ فِي حِجْرِي، قَالَتْ: فَذَهَبْتُ أَنْظُرُ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَإِذَا بَصَرُهُ قَدْ شَخَصَ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: " بَلِ الرَّفِيقُ الْأَعْلَى مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ ". فَقُلْتُ: خُيِّرْتَ فَاخْتَرْتَ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ، قَالَتْ: وَقُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ (١)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that on the day of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) passing, he returned from the mosque and lay down in my lap. During this time, a member of Abu Bakr’s (may Allah be pleased with him) household came holding a fresh green miswak. The Prophet (ﷺ) looked at it in such a way that I understood he wished to use the miswak. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Do you want me to give you this miswak?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Yes!” I took it, chewed it to soften it, and presented it to the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) used the miswak in such an excellent manner as I had seen him do before. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) put it aside. I felt that the Prophet’s (ﷺ) body was becoming heavy. I looked at his face and saw that his gaze was raised upwards and he was saying, “With the Highest Companion in Paradise.” I said, “You have been given the choice. By the One who sent you with the truth, you have chosen it.” And on that very day, the Prophet (ﷺ) passed away.
