English translation

It is narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the freed slave woman of the Prophet (ﷺ), Salma—who was the wife of the Prophet’s freed slave Abu Rafi’—came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said that Abu Rafi’ had beaten her. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Abu Rafi’, “O Abu Rafi’! Did you have a dispute with her?” Abu Rafi’ said, “O Messenger of Allah! She caused me distress.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Salma! What distress did you cause him?” Salma said, “O Messenger of Allah! I did not cause him any distress. However, while he was praying, his ablution broke, so I said to him, ‘O Abu Rafi’! The Prophet (ﷺ) has commanded the Muslims that if anyone passes wind, he should perform ablution.’ Just on this matter, he stood up and started beating me.” The Prophet (ﷺ) began to laugh at this and said, “O Abu Rafi’! She only told you something good.”
