حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لِعُمَرَ: أَمَّا قَوْلُكَ اكْتَنَيْتَ وَلَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَدٌ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَنَّانِي أَبَا يَحْيَى، فَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ فِيكَ سَرَفٌ فِي الطَّعَامِ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ أَطْعَمَ الطَّعَامَ، أَوِ الَّذِينَ يُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that as far as my kunyah "Abu Yahya" is concerned, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) gave it to me, so I can never abandon it until I meet him. As for the matter of extravagance in food, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: The best person among you is the one who feeds others.
