حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ: أَتَيْنَا حُذَيْفَةَ فَقُلْنَا: دُلَّنَا عَلَى أَقْرَبِ النَّاسِ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَدْيًا وَسَمْتًا وَدَلًّا (١) نَأْخُذْ عَنْهُ وَنَسْمَعْ مِنْهُ؟ فَقَالَ: " كَانَ مِنْ أَقْرَبِ النَّاسِ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَدْيًا وَسَمْتًا وَدَلًّا ابْنُ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ "، حَتَّى يَتَوَارَى عَنِّي فِي بَيْتِهِ، وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَ الْمَحْفُوظُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَنَّ ابْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ مِنْ أَقْرَبِهِمْ إِلَى اللهِ زُلْفَةً (٢)، ،
Translation
English translation
Abdur Rahman bin Yazid says that once we went to Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him, "Tell us of a person who is the closest to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in manners and character, so that we may learn these ways from him and listen to his words." He replied, "The one who was closest to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in manners and character was Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), to the extent that he would sit in his house hiding from me, even though the trusted companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) know that Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was the closest of all to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)."
