حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ، (١) حَدَّثَنَا فِطْرُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مَالِكَ بْنَ دِينَارٍ يَقُولُ: يَقُولُ النَّاسُ: " مَالِكُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، يَعْنِي مَالِكَ بْنَ دِينَارٍ زَاهِدٌ، إِنَّمَا الزَّاهِدُ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الَّذِي أَتَتْهُ الدُّنْيَا فَتَرَكَهَا " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
Malik bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say: People think that Malik bin Dinar is very pious, but the real abstinent one is Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him), to whom the world came and yet he abandoned it.
