English translation

Nuaim bin Hazzal narrates that Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the presence of the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have committed adultery, so carry out the punishment on me according to the Book of Allah." The Prophet (ﷺ) turned away from him, and this happened four times. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered that he be stoned to death. So the people took him towards "Harrah." When Ma'iz was being stoned and was struck by stones, he felt the pain and ran away swiftly. The people were unable to catch him, when suddenly Abdullah bin Unais met him; he struck him with a camel's bone, causing his death. Then they came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and mentioned this incident. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would have repented and Allah would have accepted his repentance." And the Prophet (ﷺ) said to my father, "Hazzal! By Allah! If you had hidden him in your clothes, it would have been better than what you did with him."
