Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Muawiyah Bahzi (may Allah be pleased with him) that once his brother Malik said to him, "Muawiyah! Muhammad (peace be upon him) has captured my neighbors. You go to him, he knows you and talks to you." I went with my brother. He requested the Prophet (peace be upon him) to release his neighbors, saying that they had become Muslims. The Prophet (peace be upon him) turned away from his request. (My brother) stood stubbornly and said softly, "By Allah! If you do this, people will think that you command something and then violate it yourself." He kept speaking, and I was dragging my cloak along, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, "What were you saying?" (He remained silent.) People informed the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he was saying, "If you do this, people will think that you command something and then violate it yourself." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Can people say such a thing? Even if I did this, its effect would be upon me, not upon them. Release his neighbors."
