حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ عِصَامٍ، أَنَّ شَيْخًا حَدَّثَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُئِلَ عَنِ الشَّفْعِ، وَالْوَتْرِ فَقَالَ: " هِيَ الصَّلَاةُ: بَعْضُهَا شَفْعٌ، وَبَعْضُهَا وَتْرٌ " (١)، ،

Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about the meaning of the words "By the even and the odd" in Surah Al-Fajr. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: It refers to prayer, as some prayers are even and some are odd.
