Musnad Ahmad Hadith 19739

It is narrated from Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! (ﷺ) Tell me, a man fights to prove his bravery, a man fights out of national pride, and a man fights for show (ostentation). Among them, who is the one fighting in the way of Allah?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) had his head lowered. Upon hearing his question, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) raised his head. If he had not been standing, the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) would not have raised his head to look at him. And the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The one who fights so that the word of Allah may be exalted, he is the one fighting in the way of Allah."
