English translation

Abu al-Tufail (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered people in the courtyard of Kufa and said: "Whoever Muslim heard the statement of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) on the occasion of Ghadir Khumm, I ask him by oath to stand in his place." So thirty men stood up, that the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) took the hand of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Do you not know that I have more right over the believers than their own selves?" The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: "Why not!" Then the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) pressed the hand of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Whoever I am beloved to, Ali should also be beloved to him. O Allah, O Allah! Love the one who loves Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and be the enemy of the one who is hostile to him." I left from there and there were some doubts and suspicions in my heart about this. So I met Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I heard Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying such and such." He said: "Why are you surprised at this? I myself heard the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) saying this."
