Original Arabic
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، وَأَبُو أَحْمَدَ قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُقَنَّعًا (١) فِي الْحَدِيدِ، قَالَ: أُقَاتِلُ أَوْ أُسْلِمُ؟ قَالَ: " بَلْ أَسْلِمْ، ثُمَّ قَاتِلْ فَأَسْلَمَ، ثُمَّ قَاتَلَ ". فَقُتِلَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " عَمِلَ هَذَا قَلِيلًا، وَأُجِرَ كَثِيرًا " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that an Ansari came to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) who was covered in iron (armor) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Should I accept Islam first or participate in jihad first?" The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Accept Islam first, then participate in jihad." So he did so, and was martyred in that jihad. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "He did little action but received a great reward."
