Original Arabic
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ النَّوَّاسَ بْنَ سَمْعَانَ الْأَنْصَارِىَّ قَالَ، - وَكَذَا قَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ (١) - قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ، فَقَالَ: " الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِكَ، وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ " (٢)، ،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Nawas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about virtue and sin. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Virtue is good character, and sin is that which pricks your heart and you dislike that people should come to know of it.
