حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ (٤) بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، يَقُولُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: " مَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَهُ فَلْيَصُمْهُ " وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا. وَأَخْرَجَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعَرٍ مِنْ كُمِّهِ فَقَالَ: " إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْهَا نِسَاؤُهُمْ " (٥)، ،
Translation
English translation
Humaid says that he once heard Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah Munawwarah during a sermon saying: O people of Madinah! Where have your scholars gone? I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: This is the day of Ashura, fasting on it is not obligatory upon us, so whoever among you wishes to fast may do so, and I am fasting. Upon this, the people also fasted. Then he took a bunch of hair in his hands and said: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) forbidding such things and saying that punishment came upon the Children of Israel only when their women made this their occupation.
