Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Sabrah that we set out from Madinah Munawwarah with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When we had completed ‘Umrah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) permitted us to go to women. We understood this to mean marriage. We returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! The women are not willing except for a fixed period. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Then do so. So I and my cousin set out. I had a sheet and he had a sheet. His sheet was better than mine, and physically I was younger than him. We reached a woman and presented ourselves to her. When she looked at my companion’s sheet, she found it better than mine, and when she looked at me, she found me younger than my companion. Eventually, she said: The sheet will be in exchange for the sheet, and with that, she chose me. So I married her for ten days in exchange for my sheet. I spent the night with her, and when morning came, I set out for the mosque. When I arrived, I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivering a sermon, saying: O people, I had permitted you to benefit from women, so whoever has fixed something, let him give it, and do not take back what you have given, and separate from them, for Allah has now made this act forbidden for you until the Day of Resurrection.
