English translation

It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Tufail bin Amr Dausi came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Do you need a strong fortress and refuge? In the time of ignorance, the tribe of Daus had a fortress." But the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) refused, saying, "This virtue Allah has reserved for the Ansar." Thus, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) migrated to Madinah Munawwarah, Tufail bin Amr also migrated, and with him another man also migrated. There, the climate of Madinah did not suit him, and that person became ill. In a state of distress, he took scissors and cut his fingers, so that his hands were filled with blood, and so much blood flowed that he died. In a dream, Amr bin Tufail saw him; he appeared in a very good state, except that his hands were covered. Tufail asked him, "What did your Lord do with you?" He replied, "Because of the blessing of migration towards the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Allah forgave me." He asked, "What is the matter that your hands appear to be covered?" He replied, "It was said to me, 'We cannot set right what you yourself have ruined.'" The next day, Tufail narrated this dream to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed, "O Allah, forgive the sin of his hands."
