Musnad Ahmad Hadith 14960

It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that Mu'adh bin Jabal used to first perform the Isha prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then go to his own people and lead them in prayer there. Once, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer. Mu'adh prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and, upon returning to his people, began reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. Seeing this, a man performed his own prayer and left. Later, someone said to him, "You have become a hypocrite." He replied, "I am not a hypocrite." Then he went and mentioned this matter to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Mu'adh prays with you, then comes back and leads us in prayer. We are people who work in the fields and labor with our own hands. He came and led us in prayer and began with Surah Al-Baqarah." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him twice, "Mu'adh, do you want to put people to trial? Why do you not recite Surah Al-A'la and Surah Ash-Shams?"
