Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the beginning, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not perform the funeral prayer for any debtor. Thus, a deceased person was brought, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "Does he have any debt?" The people informed him that he owed two dinars. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "You perform the funeral prayer of your companion yourselves." Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! His debt is upon me." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed his funeral prayer. Then, when Allah opened the doors of conquest for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he announced, "I have more right over every Muslim than his own self. Therefore, whoever dies in debt, it is upon me, and whoever leaves wealth, it is for his heirs."
