حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّمَا قَالَ: " السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ "، فَأُخِذَ الْيَهُودِيُّ، فَجِيءَ بِهِ فَاعْتَرَفَ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " رُدُّوا عَلَيْهِمْ مَا قَالُوا " (١)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Jew greeted the Prophet (ﷺ) by saying "As-Saam Alaik" (death be upon you). The Prophet (ﷺ) said to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "Call him to me and ask him, did you say 'As-Saam Alaik'?" When he admitted it, the Prophet (ﷺ) said (to his companions), "When any of the People of the Book greet you, just say 'Wa Alaik' (and upon you)."
