حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حُسَيْنٍ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: لَمَّا مَرِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَضَهُ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ فِيهِ، أَتَاهُ بِلَالٌ يُؤْذِنُهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ، فَقَالَ بَعْدَ مَرَّتَيْنِ: " يَا بِلَالُ قَدْ بَلَّغْتَ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُصَلِّ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَدَعْ ". فَرَجَعَ إِلَيْهِ بِلَالٌ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي، مَنْ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ؟ قَالَ: " مُرْ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ "، فَلَمَّا أَنْ تَقَدَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رُفِعَتْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ السُّتُورُ، قَالَ: فَنَظَرْنَا إِلَيْهِ كَأَنَّهُ وَرَقَةٌ بَيْضَاءُ عَلَيْهِ خَمِيصَةٌ، فَذَهَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَتَأَخَّرُ، وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُ الْخُرُوجَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ، فَأَشَارَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ، إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ: " أَنْ يَقُومَ فَيُصَلِّيَ "، فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِالنَّاسِ، فَمَا رَأَيْنَاهُ بَعْدُ (١)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (ﷺ) was afflicted with his final illness, on one occasion Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to inform the Prophet (ﷺ) about the prayer. After the second time, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "Bilal! You have conveyed the message. Whoever wishes may pray, and whoever wishes may leave it." Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back and asked, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! May my parents be sacrificed for you, who will lead the people in prayer?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Go and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward to lead the prayer, the Prophet (ﷺ) drew back the curtain of his house. It seemed as if a white paper was there and a sheet had been placed over it. Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to step back, thinking that the Prophet (ﷺ) wished to come for the prayer, but the Prophet (ﷺ) signaled to him to remain standing and complete the prayer. Thus, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in prayer, and after that, we did not see the Prophet (ﷺ).
