English translation

It is narrated from Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) dispatched an army under the leadership of Alqamah bin Mujazziz (may Allah be pleased with him), in which I was also included. When we reached our destination or were on the way, Alqamah (may Allah be pleased with him), upon the request of some people, allowed them to return and appointed Abdullah bin Hudhafah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a participant of Badr and had a humorous nature, as their leader. I was also among those who returned with them. On the way, we camped at a place and the people lit a fire either to cook food or to ward off the cold. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the people, "Is it not obligatory upon you to listen to and obey me?" The people replied, "Why not?" He said, "Will you do whatever I command you?" They replied, "Why not?" Upon this, he said, "I command you, by my right and your oath of obedience, to jump into this fire." The people stood up and began to prepare themselves to jump into the fire. When he saw that they were actually about to jump into the fire, he said, "Stop! I was only joking with you." Upon their return, the people mentioned this incident to the Prophet (ﷺ), and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do not obey anyone who commands you to commit a sinful act."
