Abu Nadrah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the sale of gold and silver. He replied, "As long as the transaction is hand to hand?" I said, "Yes!" He said, "There is no harm in it." Then I met Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and I told him that I had asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) this question and he had said that there is no harm in it. He said, "Did he say this? We will write him a letter that he should not give this fatwa. By Allah! A young man once brought some dates to the service of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) found the matter somewhat unusual, so he said to him, 'These do not seem to be dates from our area.' He said, 'We gave two sa’ of our dates and took one sa’ of these fine dates.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'You have engaged in a usurious transaction; do not go near it. When you do not like your own dates, sell them, then buy whatever you wish.'"
