Abu Nadrah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) whether he had heard anything from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about selling gold for gold and silver for silver. He replied, "I will tell you what I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Once, a man who dealt in dates brought some excellent dates to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The name of the Prophet's dates was 'Lawn.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him, 'Where did you get these from?' He said, 'We exchanged two sa' of our dates for one sa' of these excellent dates.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'You have engaged in a usurious transaction.' Then Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'Would the aspect of usury be greater in the case of dates or in the case of gold and silver?'"
