حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ (٣) ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ: مَا الْغِيبَةُ؟ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: " ذِكْرُكَ أَخَاكَ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ "، قَالَ: أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ؟ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: " إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِيكَ مَا تَقُولُ، فَقَدِ اغْتَبْتَهُ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ، فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ " (٤)، ،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated with the previous chain that the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked the Noble Prophet (ﷺ), "O Messenger of Allah! What is backbiting?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Backbiting is that you mention about your brother something regarding a fault which is not in him." Someone asked, "Please tell us, if my brother actually has that fault which I mention in his absence, then what is the ruling?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If the fault you mention is present in him, then you have committed backbiting against him, and if the fault you mention is not present in him, then you have slandered him."
