Musnad Ahmad Hadith 8277

Salman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once, when the teaching session of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) ended and the people dispersed, a man named Natil Shami approached Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "O! Please narrate to us a hadith which you yourself heard from the Noble Prophet (ﷺ)." He replied, "I heard the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) say: On the Day of Resurrection, the first people whose cases will be decided will be three types of people. The first will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought forth, and Allah Almighty will enumerate His blessings upon him, and he will acknowledge all of them. Allah will ask, 'What did you do with them?' He will reply, 'I fought in Your cause until I was martyred.' Allah will say, 'You are lying. You fought so that you would be called brave, and that has already been said.' Then it will be ordered, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. The second will be a man who acquired knowledge, taught it, and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought forth, and Allah Almighty will enumerate His blessings upon him, and he will acknowledge all of them. Allah will ask, 'What did you do with them?' He will say, 'I acquired knowledge and taught it for Your pleasure, and I recited the Qur'an for Your pleasure.' Allah will say, 'You are lying. You acquired knowledge so that you would be called a scholar, and that has already been said. And you recited the Qur'an so that you would be called a reciter, and that has already been said.' Then it will be ordered, and he too will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. The third will be a man upon whom Allah bestowed abundance and granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought forth, and Allah Almighty will enumerate His blessings upon him, and he will acknowledge all of them. Allah will ask, 'What did you do with them?' He will reply, 'I spent in every way You love and for Your pleasure.' Allah will say, 'You are lying. You did this so that you would be called generous, and that has already been said.' Then it will be ordered, and he too will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell."
