Original Arabic
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ زَاذَانَ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، شَرِبَ قَائِمًا، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَنْكَرُوهُ، فَقَالَ: مَا تَنْظُرُونَ (١) ؟ إِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَائِمًا، " فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَائِمًا، وَإِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَاعِدًا، فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَاعِدًا " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
It was narrated from Zadhan that `Ali bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) drank whilst standing and the people looked at him as if they found it odd. He said:
What are you looking at? If I drink whilst standing, I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) drink whilst standing, and if I drink whilst sitting, I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) drink whilst sitting.
