Musnad Ahmad Hadith 7899

It is narrated from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a funeral was brought to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), he would first ask, "Does this person have any debt?" If people said, "Yes," the Prophet (ﷺ) would ask, "Has he left anything to pay it off?" If people said, "Yes," the Prophet (ﷺ) would lead the funeral prayer. But if they replied in the negative, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say, "You should offer the funeral prayer of your companion yourselves." Then Allah opened the doors of conquest, and the Prophet (ﷺ) announced, "I have more right over the believers than their own selves, so whoever dies leaving a debt, its payment is my responsibility, and whoever leaves wealth, it is for his heirs."
