حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ شَقِيقٍ كَانَ عُثْمَانُ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ، وَعَلِيٌّ يَأْمُرُ بِهَا، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ لِعَلِيٍّ: إِنَّكَ كَذَا وَكَذَا. ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ: " لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّا قَدْ تَمَتَّعْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " فَقَالَ: أَجَلْ وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا خَائِفِينَ (٢)،
Translation
English translation
`Abdullah bin Shaqeeq said. `Uthman (رضي الله عنه) forbade tamattu` [in Haji] and `Ali (رضي الله عنه) enjoined it. ‘Uthman said to ‘Ali:
You do such and such. Then ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: You know that we did tamattu` with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). [`Uthman] said: Yes, but we were afraid.
