English translation

It is narrated from Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard a man from the tribe of Muzaynah asking the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) this question... Then he mentioned the complete hadith and said: "He asked, O Messenger of Allah! If someone steals fruit by breaking it from the clusters, what is the ruling?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "For the fruit he has eaten and not hidden, nothing is obligatory upon him, but for the fruit he takes away, double its price and beating and punishment are obligatory. And if the fruits are stolen from the place where they are dried, and their amount is at least equal to the price of a shield, then his hand should be cut off." He asked, O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling about something fallen that we find on the road in a populated area? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Announce it for a whole year; if its owner comes, hand it over to him, otherwise it is yours." He said, "What if the same thing is found in a deserted place?" He said: "In that and in buried treasure, one-fifth is obligatory."
