حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا حُيَيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحُبُلِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: جَاءَ حَمْزَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اجْعَلْنِي عَلَى شَيْءٍ أَعِيشُ بِهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " يَا حَمْزَةُ، نَفْسٌ (١) تُحْيِيهَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَمْ نَفْسٌ تُمِيتُهَا؟ " قَالَ: بَلْ نَفْسٌ أُحْيِيهَا، قَالَ: " عَلَيْكَ بِنَفْسِكَ " (٢)، ،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Appoint me to some work so that I may earn my livelihood through it." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Hamza! Is it more beloved to you to keep the soul alive or to kill it?" He replied, "To keep it alive." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Then make your soul incumbent upon yourself."
