حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ابْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّ اللهَ يُحْدِثُ لِنَبِيِّهِ مَا شَاءَ - قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَدْ قَالَ: مِمَّا شَاءَ -، وَإِنَّ مِمَّا أَحْدَثَ لِنَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ " (١)،
Translation
English translation
Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in the beginning, during prayer, we used to talk and greet each other, and would inform one another as needed. One day I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and greeted him with salam, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not reply. Various thoughts, both new and old, surrounded me. When the Prophet (ﷺ) finished the prayer, he said, "Allah gives whatever new command He wishes. Thus, Allah has now revealed this new command that you should not talk during prayer."
