English translation

It is narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that once Siddiq Akbar set out towards Busra for trade. Two Badri companions, Na’eeman and Suwaybit bin Harmalah, were with him. Suwaybit was in charge of the provisions. On one occasion, Na’eeman came to him and said, “Give me something to eat.” Suwaybit replied, “No, not until Siddiq Akbar returns.” Na’eeman was very cheerful and had a great sense of humor. He said, “I will make sure to annoy you.” Then he went to some people who were bringing goods from abroad on their mounts and said to them, “Will you buy a slave from me who is an Arab, very clever, and eloquent? It is possible that he may say, ‘I am free,’ so if you want to leave him on that basis, let me know now. Do not turn my slave against me.” They said, “We will buy him from you for ten camels.” He brought those camels, driving them along, and also brought the people with him. When the camels were tied with ropes, Na’eeman said, “Here is the slave.” The people went ahead and said to Suwaybit, “We have bought you.” Suwaybit said, “He is lying, I am free.” The people said, “Your master has already told us about you,” and saying this, they put a rope around his neck and took him away. Meanwhile, Abu Bakr returned and learned of the incident. He took some companions with him, went to those people, returned their camels, and freed Suwaybit. When the Prophet (ﷺ) learned of this, he and the companions laughed about this incident for a whole year whenever they remembered it.
