Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Musayyib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the time of death of Khawaja Abu Talib approached, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) went to him. At that time, Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah were present with him. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Dear uncle! Please acknowledge 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no god but Allah). This is a word through which I will be able to plead for you before Allah." Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said, "O Abu Talib! Will you turn away from the religion of Abdul Muttalib?" They kept repeating this until the last word that came from Abu Talib's mouth was that he remained on the religion of Abdul Muttalib. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said, "As long as I am not forbidden, I will continue to seek forgiveness for you." Then this verse was revealed: "It is not appropriate for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives." Also, this verse was revealed: "You cannot guide whom you love."
