Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Abu Umayyah Makhzumi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a thief was brought to the Noble Prophet (ﷺ). He confessed to the crime, but the stolen goods were not found with him. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "I do not think that you have committed theft?" He replied two or three times, "Why not?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Cut off his hand and bring him back to me." So his hand was cut off and he was brought to the Noble Prophet (ﷺ). The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "Say: 'Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh' (I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance)." He said exactly that: "Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh." The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) prayed, "O Allah, accept his repentance."
