حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ قَالَ: عَبْدُ اللهِ وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ هَارُونَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ التَّنُوخِيِّ قَاضِي إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ، أَنَّ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ قَدِمَ الشَّامَ وَأَهْلُ الشَّامِ لَا يُوتِرُونَ فَقَالَ: لِمُعَاوِيَةَ مَا لِي أَرَى أَهْلَ الشَّامِ لَا يُوتِرُونَ؟ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: وَوَاجِبٌ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ. سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " زَادَنِي رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ صَلَاةً وَهِيَ الْوِتْرُ، وَقْتُهَا مَا بَيْنَ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ " (١)،
Translation
English translation
When Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived in the land of Shaam, he found out that the people of Shaam did not perform Witr. He asked Amir Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), "What is the reason that I do not see the people of Shaam performing Witr?" Amir Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Is it obligatory upon them?" Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Yes! I heard the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) say: 'My Lord has added one prayer for me, and it is Witr, the time of which is between the 'Isha prayer and the rising of Fajr.'"
