حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْأَصَمِّ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عُمَرَ يَسْأَلُهُ، فَجَعَلَ عُمَرُ (١) يَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَأْسِهِ مَرَّةً، وَإِلَى رِجْلَيْهِ أُخْرَى، هَلْ يَرَى عَلَيْهِ، ، مِنَ الْبُؤْسِ (١) شَيْئًا؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: كَمْ مَالُكَ؟ قَالَ: أَرْبَعُونَ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ. قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: فَقُلْتُ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ: "لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ ذَهَبً لَابْتَغَى الثَّالِثَ، وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ، وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ " فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: مَا هَذَا؟ فَقُلْتُ: هَكَذَا أَقْرَأَنِيهَا أُبَيٌّ، قَالَ: فَمَرَّ بِنَا إِلَيْهِ. قَالَ: فَجَاءَ إِلَى أُبَيٍّ، فَقَالَ: مَا يَقُولُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ أُبَيٌّ: هَكَذَا أَقْرَأَنِيهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. قَالَ: أَفَأُثْبِتُهَا، قَالَ: نَعَمْ (٢) فَأَثْبَتَهَا (٣)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "Famine has consumed us." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Which tribe do you belong to?" Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kept inquiring about his lineage until he recognized him and found out that he was actually well-off financially. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If a person has (one or two valleys) full of wealth and riches, he will still seek a third." Upon this, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) added, "The belly of the son of Adam is filled only with dust. Then Allah turns with mercy to the one who repents." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "From whom did you hear this?" He replied, "From Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him)." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Come to me tomorrow." So the next day, he set out towards Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "What does Ibn Abbas say?" He replied, "The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) taught me in this way." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Shall I write it down?" He replied, "Yes." So he wrote it down.
